Join a bi-weekly Rebel Reading Circle on

Every Wednesday, beginning June 4, 7:00pm-8:30pm

Learn about the proud, but too often hidden, history of Chicanos in the U.S. Discover a wealth of little-known information about organizing by farmworkers, students and Chicana feminists in the Yakima Valley and in Seattle. Relearn the hard-won lessons of historic labor strikes and boycotts by the United Farm Workers. Discuss the still debated question of Chicano identity.

Held at the Bread and Roses Center, 819 N. Killingsworth St. (1/2 block west of N. Albina).  One TriMet bus lines #4 and #72.

Books may be purchased at the reading circles or drop by the FSP Bookstore at the Bread and Roses Center, Monday through Friday, between 11am and 5pm.  Or order online at www.RedLetterPress.org.

Reading circles are free.  Come to a few or all sessions.  Hearty snacks will be provided for donation.

Celebrate May Day at a book launch for “Viva la Raza”
Civil rights and labor activist Megan Cornish will talk about her new book, Viva la Raza: A History of Chicano Identity and Resistance, which describes monumental labor battle, surveys the vibrant movement of the 1960s and ’70s, and focuses unique attention on women and Latina/o lesbians and gays. The volume is co-authored with Yolanda Alaniz and has a foreword by the esteemed Chicana/o Studies Professor and historian Rodolfo Acuña.

A festive Southwest supper will be served at 1:00pm for a $9.00 donation. The event is hosted by the Freedom Socialist Party and the National Comrades of Color Caucus and will take place at the Bread & Roses Center, 819 N. Killingsworth St., Portland. The ABC’s of Marx’s Capital
Every day when you go to work your labor creates wealth, but you’re still broke. Why?  Come see a film short, Marx for Beginners, based on the popular book by Mexican cartoonist Rius,  followed by a panel of workingclass scholars who will show how Karl Marx broke down capitalist economics in his still-controversial book.

This public educational will be held at the Bread & Roses Center, 819 N. Killingsworth St., in Portland (½ block west of N. Albina and N. Killingsworth intersection.  On TriMet bus lines #4 and #72).  There will be a Hearty Brunch served at 12:00pm for an $8.00 donation to fuel a lively discourse.  The seminar is free.

“Hell No, Jim Crow! A Salute to the Power of Jena’s Grassroots”
A multi-racial panel will examine the courageous and inspiring community organizing in defense of the Jena 6 led by African American youth and women in Jena, Louisiana.

Speakers include Bo-Mandela Cordeta, a Black/Filipino youth activist and musician; Ethiopia Belay, a Black anti-capitalist feminist; and Megan Cornish, affirmative action pioneer with Radical Women.

Door donation is $2.00.  A Creole Buffet will be served at 6:30pm for an $8.00 donation. A no-host bar will also be available. The forum will be held at the Bread and Roses Center, 819 N. Killingsworth St., Portland (1/2 block west of N. Albina on TriMet lines #4 & #72).
