DACA double-cross

Trump’s cancellation of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) is a cruel and cynical blow to 800,000 undocumented young people. It holds long-time resident youth as political hostages in order to get a dysfunctional and opportunistic Congress to authorize more crackdowns on border security, more ICE raids, and more deportations.

Meanwhile, losing drivers’ licenses, work permits, and access to schooling will devastate countless young lives. Even worse, their DACA registration can now be used to track down and deport them in less than six months.

DACA was never a solution, because its requirements for college or military participation excluded the majority of young immigrants, who are workers. And the protection was always temporary.

Kudos to those courageous undocumented activists who, though vulnerable, refuse to stay silent in the face of increased assaults on other immigrants! Kudos to all who fight to close detention centers, halt deportations, and open the borders!

This is a time to fight for all undocumented immigrants, not pit some against the rest. And it’s the perfect time for the electrifying anti-fascist organizing that has emerged to join forces with immigrant rights warriors against the entrenched racism of the far right and Trump White House.
