For all unionists, the epic battle being waged by nearly 40,000 Verizon strikers is a big deal. The telecommunications behemoth is demanding obscene concessions, and is using scabs in an attempt to break the unions, the Communications Workers of America (CWA) and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW).

A tough fight. The strike is hitting Verizon operations in the Northeast, and has lasted over a month. Workers are hell-bent to stop the company from gutting pensions and healthcare, outsourcing even more jobs, and forcing technicians to work far from home. Scabs are met with spirited picket lines, which are bolstered by picketers from a host of other unions.

All hands on deck. Verizon has huge resources to throw at the strikers, so solidarity from the rest of labor is crucial.

Strong support in New York and New Jersey should be mobilized into a general strike. It is time for CWA and IBEW locals across the nation to work with labor councils to organize ongoing protests at Verizon stores, complete with visuals of angry customers cancelling their Verizon service. All unions can donate to the strike fund.
