Study circle – Imperialism: The highest stage of capitalism

Have you ever wondered if desperate poverty, filthy rich entrepreneurs, endless war, oppression and shrinking opportunities for working people are all that we have to look forward to? Imperialism — monopoly capitalism — is this system’s ultimate stage, and it’s riddled with contradictions.

This study group will discuss Lenin’s Imperialism the Highest Stage of Capitalism for an understanding of increasing monopolisation, wars over territories and profit and much more. We’ll learn how Lenin, the great Russian revolutionary leader, is as relevant now as he was when he wrote this text 100 years ago.

This classic draws on earlier works by Marx, Engels and writers of the time to explain the development of capitalism throughout the 20th century and beyond. We’ll also discover how to tackle dying capitalism and avoid the bear traps along the way and appreciate how the current system has evolved. If you want to understand imperialism and then fight to overturn the system that created it, this study group is for you.

Dinner, catering for vegetarians and vegans, served at 6:30 pm for an $8.50 donation. The discussion kicks off at 7 pm.

The discussion, hosted by the Freedom Socialist Party will be held at Solidarity Salon (address and travel information is above).

Walk for Justice for Refugees

Detention on Manus Island was declared illegal in April last year, but people are still being held there. Refugees trapped on Manus and Nauru are approaching their fourth year on the detention islands. The U.S. refugee deal remains uncertain with no-one yet offered resettlement.

Also, over 30,000 refugees are living on Bridging Visas in our community with their futures in limbo. They are only eligible for Temporary Protection Visas. Many families are separated by the harsh system, and people despair of ever being reunited. Many fear being deported to danger under the government’s new Fast Track Assessment process.

Now more than ever is the time to build the movement for refugee rights.

The Freedom Socialist Party has joined with many dozens of organisations to endorse the 2017 Walk for Justice Refugees which will assemble at the State Library.

Our joint contingent with our sister organisation, Radical Women, which has also endorsed, will address the underpinning causes of this mass global dislocation and raise the call for open borders. Get in touch to march with us as or call 9388 0062.

Reception to welcome visiting U.S. socialist feminist leader, Nancy Reiko Kato, to Melbourne

Don’t miss this very special event to welcome an organiser from the frontlines of resistance in the United States.

Nancy, a Japanese American lesbian, is a public sector worker and trade unionist from San Francisco. She travelled to Washington DC as part of the Socialist Feminist Contingent in the massive protests at Trump’s inauguration. A veteran fighter against the far right, Nancy is a co-founder of the Bay Area Coalition for Our Reproductive Rights. And she has gone nose-to-nose against fascists and neo-Nazis, from South Carolina to the West Coast.

She has authored many “Voices of Colour” columns in the Freedom Socialist newspaper and recently wrote a soap box piece, which links the internment of her Japanese American family during World War II with today’s Islamophobia.

A past National Organiser for Radical Women, Nancy is a founding member of the National Comrades of Colour Caucus, a leadership body comprised of members of colour in both the Freedom Socialist Party and Radical Women.

Mix and mingle with Nancy in a relaxed atmosphere and be inspired by some of her writing.

The reception, hosted by Freedom Socialist Party and Radical Women, will be held at Solidarity Salon (address and travel information is above).

The bar will be open at 6:30 pm, dinner will be served from 7:00 pm

We’ll be serving a Brunswick style multicultural dinner catering for a range of diets, including vegan and gluten free, for a $10 donation.

This event is a benefit the Freedom Socialist and Freedom Socialist Organiser fund drive.
